this week is the last post~
Thank you for Dr Yoon and every students who make this class so meaningful to everyone.
honestrly it's very hard time for 16 weeks...
because this class was my first english class and the substance is not so clear.
that was the a double whammy for me.

but it was very interesting and deep to me. I'm so happy to participated this class this year. There's no class like this that can talk and arguing about this kind of things.
I want to think about it more and more after this class.

Aristotle

-we don't know well about our body system more than from 19th biology.

Bergson

:all technology simply extends the body.

Mcluhan

-content have to be changed to fit to the medium

technology expand their impact to take the nature's place so the medium can't change the content, nature, it have to be fited to content.

McLuhan-media contains a kind of message

central culture(HIGH?)
popular culture(LOW?)

why we call it 'central'?
actually they are almost 'edge'.
usually people say than only a small number of people, so-called the wealthy classes enjoy this part.
then, the history and research is not a reason of this situation.
I think the culture doesn't have the classes, but we are divide the culture in up and down classes.
it looks like just the vanity of capitalism.

kill TV - Why?
they just broadcasting, and we are watching.
No Interaction=Old media

what about Movie?
we just go into the dark, closed room, sitting on the chair, and just looking at the screen for two hours, or more than three hours...
today, some people made the 'Interactive movie'. but I thing that is not the 'real movie'. it is just the 'interactive movie'. that's all.
It can't replace the Movie's area, or role.
so I think we can not say like that-the Old Media, the things that should be replaced by something, and New Media, the things that can replace some old things.

this week's part is very very hard for me..
nother parts also difficult but it's more than others, much more difficult.
moreover I have my presentation this week..some of parts what I express are perfectly different with the Mr.Yoon's lecture. (It's very shameful.....;)

The main topic is about 'The new media have to be perfectly 'NEW' with the past?'

-Medium has its own kind of essence.
-Medium has to be genuinely new from the past and old media.

This book said 'it's modernist's view', than I have to judge this? right or wrong?
than, Of course, I can say 'It's Wrong'.
I think every thing that we call 'New medium' is not a Perctly new creation.
Ultimately, Many 'New' mediums created for the Convenience.
By experiencing 'inconvenience', we can make another, more convenient midium, media.

'Pictorialist' was a very funny thing to me..I want to learn more about them.

what things are have to be continue?
think in two sides - business side, and academical side
for example, the phone number system
- the Phone change itself very quickly, variously.(dial phone to electronic phone, cellurar phone, internet phone...)
but they keep the Number system until now. why? why we can't call with the voice or picture??
what we call 'NEW',in substance, it's should be Not Perfectly 'NEW'.
Mcluhan propose that 'New' in new media is 'the old media's refreshion'. Remediation.
new media are not born in a vacuum.

we can experience

2. online communication space

This week, we talked about some characteristics of new media, Hypertext and Dispersal.
Hypertext = which is made up by from discrete units of material in which each one of pathways to other units. the work is a web of connection which the user explores using the navigational aids of the interface design.
user can jump to other keywords or stop and exit anytime they want. it's very easy to move any where. it works with user's association and can't control by producer.
from this book, DR.Bush suggest the idea about 'hypertext' and 'memex' in 1945. It's amazing!!!
'memex' is seems like the basis model of 'PC' and 'World Wide Web'. How can He design that machin in 1945???? unbelievable..
Dispersal=the product of shifts in our relationships with both the consumption and production of media text.

10/4 summary

This class, we distinguished new media and talk about some characteristics of new media.
Until now we talked about the meaning of new media in abstract point of view. but this time we tried to break down 'new media' into some more manageable constituent parts.
And we define the some characteristics of new media, 'Digitality', 'Interactivity'.
It became a little bit more easy to understand about the 'new media'.

It's very interesting that we talk about interactivity between costomer and seller.
I wrote about the commercial part of 'new media' in last post, I realized that the meaning of the 'interactivity' is not simple as I think about it before, actually. It is also relating with the commercial things.
'New media' has strong influence not only on technological part but also on marketplace.
It is the topic for all the people in this century. (programers and designers, planers and managers...)
Then, This Is the Web 2.0?!

We can use the word 'new' and 'media' together because of inclusiveness. It means that it doesn't matter how to use or how to express. It's the most interesting part of new media.
I think that No word can explain new media more effectively than 'Inclusive'.

And I think about that, when people start to thinking not only about self-surving from hunger, war and disease, but also having property, society etc.., and then the 'media' can expand field.

-The ideological connotations of new media

the word 'new' in 'new media' is meaning 'most recent'. It's the place for the avant- gardes.( forward-thinking people. who think about 'The thing' that never been before.)
It made more educational opportunity for us.
so we can studyin Soongsil Media school. and then, we are the avant-gardes?!
It's right that the 'New Media' has the glamorous and exiting meanings. it isn't limited.
In DVD 'Da Vinci Project', the guy who work in Artcom, the company that producing new media art work, said that this century is very similar to Renaissance.
He said in Renaissance, they made an effort to mix the skills and knowledges of various fields, and it's very similar to our works.
what a wonderful comment it is!
It's very exiting that we are live in the Renaissance of 21th century.

-The NewMedia
In old times, it was only a 'Medium' for communicating and producting.
but now we can call it 'New Media'.
'New Media' is possible to interaction, it's not restricted to any one sector or element.

Meaning of the word ' Media' was very difficult to understand.
It's been three years that I study about 'Media', but I couldn't get some answer about that.
I think that I can never understand about that obviously, forever. because they have never stood still.

The lecture is about the 'Art'. Many scholars are talking about 'Art' continuously, until now. what is art? is it important?? is it good or bad??
Many people says Art is hard to understand and it's not easy to enjoy. But I think Art is not special.
We always think about the aesthetic side. We always choose more beautiful thing.
In this case the meaning of 'Beauty' isn't same with usual 'Beauty'.
We don't need to seem beautiful to everyone.
When I match up my shirts and pants blue and red, that's Art. We don't need to judge it, good or bad, beautiful or ugly, right or not right. The important thing is self satisfaction. Mona Risa's Smile is beautiful or not, the judgement is scholars' job.
